U.S. Department of Energy Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program (MLEF)

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.  Stipends start at $600 per week and eligible Fellows will receive an additional travel and housing allowance.  For more information, visit http://orise.orau.gov/mlef/

Eligibility
  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of application;

Undergraduate Summer Research Program


 
   

I am writing to request your help in identifying undergraduate students who are interested in a summer research experience. I hope you will encourage them to consider applying to the 2015 Nebraska Summer Research Program.

Nebraska's summer program offers research opportunities in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields in addition to an interdisciplinary Minority Health Disparities program aimed at conducting cutting edge social and behavioral research into understanding and reducing health disparities and in diversifying minority health researchers. A complete listing of faculty mentors and research project descriptions can be found on our website at http://www.unl.edu/summerprogram. Students can also find information about program benefits including a competitive stipend, room and board, travel expenses, and more. 
Summer 2015 programs include:
During the Nebraska Summer Research Program, students receive first-hand exposure to research and the experience of graduate school. They work closely with faculty mentors and research teams of graduate students and other summer scholars. Students also have opportunities to participate in meaningful social and professional development activities outside of the laboratory.
Our online application makes it easy for students to apply. Priority review begins Monday, February 2 and all applications must be completed by Monday, March 2. Students historically underrepresented in graduate education and students from academic institutions where research programs are limited are especially encouraged to apply.

Department of Homeland Security HS-STEM 2015 Summer Internships

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
2015 HS-STEM Summer Internships

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) Disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. It is open to students in a broad spectrum of HS-STEM Disciplines and DHS mission-relevant Research Areas.

Undergraduate students receive a $6,000 stipend plus travel expenses.

Graduate students receive a $7,000 stipend plus travel expenses.

10-week research experiences are offered at: Argonne, Berkeley, Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, and Sandia National Laboratories; as well as at Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute, Coast Guard Research and Development Center, Customs and Borders Protection Laboratories and Scientific Services, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Naval Research Laboratory, Engineer Research and Development Center, National Security Technologies Remote Sensing Laboratory, Transportation Security Laboratory, and more.

Areas of research: Engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological / life sciences, environmental science, emergency and incident management, social sciences, and more.

U.S. citizenship required

University of Michigan Medical Scientist Training Program "UM-SMART" summer program announcement

I am writing to make you aware of a ten week summer research program that Michigan's Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), (which is an MD/Ph.D. program) is sponsoring. The "UM-SMART" summer program is designed to provide an opportunity for highly motivated and talented undergraduates interested in careers as physician scientists to enhance their science and academic skills.

The program is targeted towards students who are from geographically, culturally or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, students who have experienced financial hardship, and students with disabilities.  Applicants should have completed at least their freshman undergraduate year.

The main focus of the program is laboratory biomedical research, but the program also includes physician shadowing, an MCAT prep course, and an opportunity to attend bi-weekly seminars and a 2 day MSTP retreat in August.

Partners in the Park, Mount Rainier


The University of Washington is excited to host a new Partners in the Parks program in Mount Rainier National Park in August. We added our program a bit late to the PitP lineup this year and are eager to have students join us. We have a wonderful group of partners ready to introduce students to this extraordinary place. Rising to 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier is an icon in the Washington landscape. The fifth oldest National Park, Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak in the lower 48 states and is the centerpiece of a national park filled with ancient forests, sub-alpine meadows, and dramatic glacial river systems.
Join us on a trip around the mountain exploring the history, beauty, and diversity of this extraordinary place. We will meet with park officials, University researchers, and more – all people passionate about Mount Rainier. As we learn the story of Mount Rainier, we will also wrestle with the complexities of managing a park that is both 97 percent wilderness and welcomes approximately 2 million visitors a year.
The majority of our trip will be moderate to strenuous day hiking with group camping in an established campground. We plan to do an overnight excursion in the wilderness backcountry on the last two days of our trip. Our boots will hit the trail every day and as we say in Seattle, we’ll hope “the mountain is out”!

Applications for Student Research Stipends are now available.

1.  R.J. McELROY STUDENT/FACULTY RESEARCH FUND

Application/Deadline:  Email roy.ventullo@wartburg.edu for an application and cover page.  The cover page and proposal (as a word document) due Monday, April 14th to Sally Malcolm in the office of V.P. for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty.
Proposals will be pre-reviewed by a panel of faculty members and up to four proposals will be forwarded to the McElroy/Iowa College Foundation for consideration.
Eligibility.  Students can major in any department.  Applications require dual authorship by the proposing student or teams of students (2 or more) and a sponsoring faculty member.  Research in credit courses is not eligible.
Qualifying Activity: The research fund will cover any expenses necessary to support activities defined in a credible research proposal (supplies, travel, student stipends).  Maximum award will be $2,000.

2.  Wartburg Undergraduate Research Fellowships

Application/Deadline:  Due Monday April 14th, 2014.  Application is on-line at: http://www.wartburg.edu/forms/grant_app.aspx . Program information can be found at: http://www.wartburg.edu/wcur/fellowshipsgrants.html. Proposals are reviewed by a panel of faculty members.
Eligibility:  Students can major in any department.  Applications require authorship by the proposing student and a letter of support by the sponsoring faculty member. May include student stipends, supplies, equipment, or travel for research.  Limit $2,500 per student in summer, $1,000 during the academic year.  Research conducted in credit courses is not eligible.

The ACTC OSAP Student Summer Session in Oxford for 2014
The Association for Core Texts and Courses (ACTC) and the Oxford Study Abroad Programme (OSAP) jointly sponsor a Summer Session in Oxford in the liberal arts from May 20 to June 17, 2014. Offered in association with Oxford University’s New College, the program consists of a core text seminar on Human Nature and Technology, suitable to fulfill a core curriculum or elective requirement, and an Oxford tutorial, formed and chosen by each participating student in cooperation with an Oxford faculty member.

The Summer Session in Oxford program is offered exclusively to students of Member Institutions of ACTC. The Human Nature and Technology seminar will be taught by Patrick Malcolmson, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science at St. Thomas University, former provost and experienced professor of an interdisciplinary core text program. Credit for both the tutorial and the seminar will be provided by St. Bonaventure University, as CLAR 101 (seminar) and CLAR 201 (tutorial) and should be transferable to American institutions. Students can earn six (6) credits, but they are urged to check with their home institution on accepting the transfer credits for a degree.

Applied Math REU in California

2014 Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Applied Math Summer Undergraduate Research Program at UC Merced is called the ARCHIMEDES Summer Program, and it stands for Applied ResearCH IModEling and Data-Enabled Science. The objectives of the program are to:
  1. Introduce students to scientific computing to strengthen programming skills,
  2. Use mathematical models to solve real-world problems,
  3. Apply computational tools to research level problems, and
  4. Analyze results using data and translate into scientific context.
The ARCHIMEDES Program will run for 9 weeks. In the first week, students will participate in a computational "bootcamp" designed to develop fundamental computational skills, preparatory to doing research during the rest of their summer program. The students will then work intensely for the remaining eight weeks, inteams of four and with a faculty mentor, on projects with strong computational and modeling components. Students will actively participate in weekly workshops and presentations to practice and improve their oral communication skills. They will also produce a technical report and a poster, and present at a public research symposium at the end of the program.
PROJECTS
1. Sensitivity Analysis of a Mathematical Model of Blood Coagulation. Blood coagulation is a large network of biochemical reactions that produces an enzyme necessary to clot formation and the cessation of bleeding. Mathematical models have been developed to better understand blood coagulation and to predict outcomes of perturbations to the reaction network. Assessing the predictive capability of such models is crucial if they are to be used to inform clinicians. In this project, students will first learn the biology of blood coagulation, basic theory of ODEs and methods to solve them using MATLAB, and core methodology of sensitivity analyses. They will incorporate cellular-surface binding into a current mathematical model of coagulation, perform sensitivity analysis of the model to its kinetic rate constants, and determine the predictive capability of the model. They will compare results from the mathematical model with those from other models and experiments published in biological literature.Project Mentors: Prof. Karin Leiderman and Prof. Suzanne Sindi.
2. Optimization Methods in Imaging. With the advent of cheaper cameras, large volumes of data in the form of images are generated everyday. To process such data, fast, robust, accurate, and scalable computational methods are needed. This research project will focus on optimization methods for extracting information from noisy and inexact observations from imaging. In particular, we are interested in applications where a sequence of measurements are obtained, such as videos. These problems are high-dimensional. Thus, large-scale optimization methods are needed to solve these problems. For this project, students will (1) model how the signal is projected onto the observed data, (2) solve the recovery problem using large-scale optimization algorithms, and (3) analyze the results and compare them to known data to evaluate the model and the optimization methods. This project will consider different types of approaches for optimization, such as first-order methods and matrix-free methods.Project Mentor: Prof. Roummel Marcia.

DC Summer Internship Opportunity – Feb. 10 Priority Deadline

The priority deadline for the Summer 2014 LIVE. LEARN. INTERN. programs in Washington, DC is coming up on February 10. The final application deadline is March 18. Please pass the announcement below to students in your honors programs who may be interested in spending a summer interning and earning credit in the nation's capital.

LearnLab Undergraduate Research Opportunity



LearnLab Undergraduate Research Opportunity
Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have an exciting opportunity summer research experience for undergraduates (REU) available for undergraduates.  The application for this program can be found at http://www.learnlab.org/opportunities/LearnLab_Summer_REU.php.

This REU program is sponsored by LearnLab, a Science of Learning Center funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). We encourage applications from students who would like to conduct research in the fields of psychology, education, computer science, human-computer
interfaces and language technologies. LearnLab's REU program allows talented undergraduates to spend 8 weeks during the summer in a research laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, or one of our research partners.  The REU program supports LearnLab's commitment to training a diverse set of science, technology, education, and psychology leaders.

Applications are encouraged from students who wish to learn to conduct research in a modern academic research laboratory under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers and experiment in real classroom environments. The REU program will expose students to the excitement and opportunities of a research career. This experience will provide excellent preparation for students interested in subsequently pursuing a Masters or Ph.D. degree. Although students from other years may apply, this opportunity is most fitting for a student at the end of the junior year of undergraduate studies.

Each student will receive a fellowship stipend of $4000 for the eight-week REU program. Food, housing and travel will also be provided. Students will conduct research in an area matched to the interests expressed in the student's application. Guidance and supervision of the research project will be provided by the faculty member as well as, in some cases, a postdoctoral fellow and/or advanced graduate student.

Seminars specific to those participating in the REU program will be held weekly including seminars on graduate admissions and career opportunities in science, education, computer science and engineering. In addition, LearnLab seminars and those held by Carnegie Mellon's Human Computer Interaction Institute and Language Technologies Institute and seminars at
Pitt's Language Research and Development Center will be open to the students, giving them exposure to a wide range of research in learning sciences.

There are several benefits that the participating students may receive. If the student's research in the summer is of high quality and has added value to an ongoing research project, past students have been asked to be a coauthor on the research team's publication on that subject. Addition of publications to the resume of a graduate school applicant
always greatly improves the application. If the quality of the research is high, the faculty member who advised the student would likely be willing to write a letter of recommendation for the student which could be included in a graduate school application. Research experience in one of the National Science Foundation's premier research centers will be viewed attractively. Finally, a summer spent in one of the National Science Foundation's
premier project areas is a plus in an application whether it be for entry to Carnegie Mellon or the University of Pittsburgh or to any other institution.

There are scholarships available for graduate work on projects in LearnLab. The student should inquire about these possibilities during the summer program.

REU Program Dates: Students will begin their research experience on Sunday, June 1, 2014 with a welcoming reception and information session. The REU program will end on Friday July 25, 2014 with a poster session in the afternoon. Submission of an application indicates that the applicant agrees to be present from June 1 to 4pm July 25, 2014 inclusive.

Application Deadline: Deadline for applications is February 17, 2014. Students will be informed of our decision by March 3, 2014.

Minimum Requirements: Students should have a minimum of 3.5 GPA out of 4.0, although we will consider students who show by other measures that they are exceptional and who have GPAs over 3.2. Class standing and grades in specific subjects that are close to the field of research will also be considered, as are recommendations.  Students must also be United States citizens or have a current F1 visa.

Number of slots/ positions available: LearnLab can accommodate as many as 10 positions, although in any given year, we may decide to fund less than 10 applicants.

The program offers students an excellent opportunity to hone research skills and to experience life as a graduate student.
