The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The Office of International Climate Change Policy and Technology within the Office of International Affairs (IA) seeks a talented and committed person to support efforts related to the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), which is a high-level forum to promote policies and programs that advance clean energy technology, to share lessons learned and best practices, and to encourage the transition to a global clean energy economy. Participating governments include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Desired qualifications:

• Experience with electricity markets design, regulation, and analysis. 
• Project management experience
• International experience, and general experience in energy and climate change policy topics and analyses are preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills, communication skills, and analytical abilities.
• Ability to commit to a full-time appointment, for at least one year, located in Washington, D.C.

Stipends range from $60,000 to $90,000 depending on academic level, skills, and experience. Additional allowances for medical insurance or transportation may be provided.

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program, sponsored by the Office of Fossil Energy (FE), U.S. Department of Energy, is now accepting applications for a10-week summer internship.  MLEF's mission is to improve opportunities for women and minority students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, but all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. The program allows students to apply their academic achievements to actual research while gaining hands-on experience.

Selected MLEF Fellows will receive a bi-weekly stipend, approved travel costs to/from their host site and will attend a Technical Forum to present their project at the end of the internship.

The Office of Science /Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications to its 2014 Spring Term Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program, with all required application materials, including recommendations, due by 5:00 PM ET on October 1, 2013. The SULI program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories, where selected students participate as interns appointed at participating host labs. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

2013 Geothermal Student Competition

The US Department of Energy’s Geothermal Technologies Program and Oak Ridge Institute for Science Education are pleased to announce the 2013 Geothermal Student Competition

The Challenge:

The Competition seeks to engage students in a collaborative exercise to develop a business plan for developing a geothermal enterprise. Applicants are encouraged to consider a candidate resource in their home state/region, though convincing plans for any domestic target will be considered.

The US Department Energy’s Geothermal Technologies Program and Oak Ridge Institute for Science Education are pleased to announce the 2013 Geothermal Student Competition.

Who Should Apply?

The Competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students in science, engineering, and business programs of study.

How does the Competition work?

Students will prepare a concept paper with the guiding topic: Innovative geothermal project proposal (related to electricity production—not primarily to direct use applications although these may be combined with electricity production) in your selected locale. Students are required to show evidence that existing data, or new data was used to support their approach. The seven most compelling and competitive applications will be selected through a screening process described in the evaluation section of this document.

Seven Semi-Finalist Awards

Each Semi-finalist will receive a total award of $5,500, where $5000 is expected to be used as planning funds (stipend) and $500 is to be used to startup a geothermal club on your campus
