U.S. Department of Energy Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program (MLEF)

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.  Stipends start at $600 per week and eligible Fellows will receive an additional travel and housing allowance.  For more information, visit http://orise.orau.gov/mlef/

Eligibility
  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of application;
  • Be a U.S. Citizen;

I am writing to request your help in identifying undergraduate students who are interested in a summer research experience. I hope you will encourage them to consider applying to the 2015 Nebraska Summer Research Program.

Nebraska's summer program offers research opportunities in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields in addition to an interdisciplinary Minority Health Disparities program aimed at conducting cutting edge social and behavioral research into understanding and reducing health disparities and in diversifying minority health researchers. A complete listing of faculty mentors and research project descriptions can be found on our website at http://www.unl.edu/summerprogram. Students can also find information about program benefits including a competitive stipend, room and board, travel expenses, and more. 
Summer 2015 programs include:
During the Nebraska Summer Research Program, students receive first-hand exposure to research and the experience of graduate school. They work closely with faculty mentors and research teams of graduate students and other summer scholars. Students also have opportunities to participate in meaningful social and professional development activities outside of the laboratory.
Our online application makes it easy for students to apply. Priority review begins Monday, February 2 and all applications must be completed by Monday, March 2. Students historically underrepresented in graduate education and students from academic institutions where research programs are limited are especially encouraged to apply.

Applied Math REU in California

2014 Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Applied Math Summer Undergraduate Research Program at UC Merced is called the ARCHIMEDES Summer Program, and it stands for Applied ResearCH IModEling and Data-Enabled Science. The objectives of the program are to:
  1. Introduce students to scientific computing to strengthen programming skills,
  2. Use mathematical models to solve real-world problems,
  3. Apply computational tools to research level problems, and
  4. Analyze results using data and translate into scientific context.
The ARCHIMEDES Program will run for 9 weeks. In the first week, students will participate in a computational "bootcamp" designed to develop fundamental computational skills, preparatory to doing research during the rest of their summer program. The students will then work intensely for the remaining eight weeks, inteams of four and with a faculty mentor, on projects with strong computational and modeling components. Students will actively participate in weekly workshops and presentations to practice and improve their oral communication skills. They will also produce a technical report and a poster, and present at a public research symposium at the end of the program.
PROJECTS
1. Sensitivity Analysis of a Mathematical Model of Blood Coagulation. Blood coagulation is a large network of biochemical reactions that produces an enzyme necessary to clot formation and the cessation of bleeding. Mathematical models have been developed to better understand blood coagulation and to predict outcomes of perturbations to the reaction network. Assessing the predictive capability of such models is crucial if they are to be used to inform clinicians. In this project, students will first learn the biology of blood coagulation, basic theory of ODEs and methods to solve them using MATLAB, and core methodology of sensitivity analyses. They will incorporate cellular-surface binding into a current mathematical model of coagulation, perform sensitivity analysis of the model to its kinetic rate constants, and determine the predictive capability of the model. They will compare results from the mathematical model with those from other models and experiments published in biological literature.Project Mentors: Prof. Karin Leiderman and Prof. Suzanne Sindi.
2. Optimization Methods in Imaging. With the advent of cheaper cameras, large volumes of data in the form of images are generated everyday. To process such data, fast, robust, accurate, and scalable computational methods are needed. This research project will focus on optimization methods for extracting information from noisy and inexact observations from imaging. In particular, we are interested in applications where a sequence of measurements are obtained, such as videos. These problems are high-dimensional. Thus, large-scale optimization methods are needed to solve these problems. For this project, students will (1) model how the signal is projected onto the observed data, (2) solve the recovery problem using large-scale optimization algorithms, and (3) analyze the results and compare them to known data to evaluate the model and the optimization methods. This project will consider different types of approaches for optimization, such as first-order methods and matrix-free methods.Project Mentor: Prof. Roummel Marcia.

LearnLab Undergraduate Research Opportunity



LearnLab Undergraduate Research Opportunity
Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have an exciting opportunity summer research experience for undergraduates (REU) available for undergraduates.  The application for this program can be found at http://www.learnlab.org/opportunities/LearnLab_Summer_REU.php.

This REU program is sponsored by LearnLab, a Science of Learning Center funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). We encourage applications from students who would like to conduct research in the fields of psychology, education, computer science, human-computer
interfaces and language technologies. LearnLab's REU program allows talented undergraduates to spend 8 weeks during the summer in a research laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, or one of our research partners.  The REU program supports LearnLab's commitment to training a diverse set of science, technology, education, and psychology leaders.

Applications are encouraged from students who wish to learn to conduct research in a modern academic research laboratory under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers and experiment in real classroom environments. The REU program will expose students to the excitement and opportunities of a research career. This experience will provide excellent preparation for students interested in subsequently pursuing a Masters or Ph.D. degree. Although students from other years may apply, this opportunity is most fitting for a student at the end of the junior year of undergraduate studies.

Each student will receive a fellowship stipend of $4000 for the eight-week REU program. Food, housing and travel will also be provided. Students will conduct research in an area matched to the interests expressed in the student's application. Guidance and supervision of the research project will be provided by the faculty member as well as, in some cases, a postdoctoral fellow and/or advanced graduate student.

Seminars specific to those participating in the REU program will be held weekly including seminars on graduate admissions and career opportunities in science, education, computer science and engineering. In addition, LearnLab seminars and those held by Carnegie Mellon's Human Computer Interaction Institute and Language Technologies Institute and seminars at
Pitt's Language Research and Development Center will be open to the students, giving them exposure to a wide range of research in learning sciences.

There are several benefits that the participating students may receive. If the student's research in the summer is of high quality and has added value to an ongoing research project, past students have been asked to be a coauthor on the research team's publication on that subject. Addition of publications to the resume of a graduate school applicant
always greatly improves the application. If the quality of the research is high, the faculty member who advised the student would likely be willing to write a letter of recommendation for the student which could be included in a graduate school application. Research experience in one of the National Science Foundation's premier research centers will be viewed attractively. Finally, a summer spent in one of the National Science Foundation's
premier project areas is a plus in an application whether it be for entry to Carnegie Mellon or the University of Pittsburgh or to any other institution.

There are scholarships available for graduate work on projects in LearnLab. The student should inquire about these possibilities during the summer program.

REU Program Dates: Students will begin their research experience on Sunday, June 1, 2014 with a welcoming reception and information session. The REU program will end on Friday July 25, 2014 with a poster session in the afternoon. Submission of an application indicates that the applicant agrees to be present from June 1 to 4pm July 25, 2014 inclusive.

Application Deadline: Deadline for applications is February 17, 2014. Students will be informed of our decision by March 3, 2014.

Minimum Requirements: Students should have a minimum of 3.5 GPA out of 4.0, although we will consider students who show by other measures that they are exceptional and who have GPAs over 3.2. Class standing and grades in specific subjects that are close to the field of research will also be considered, as are recommendations.  Students must also be United States citizens or have a current F1 visa.

Number of slots/ positions available: LearnLab can accommodate as many as 10 positions, although in any given year, we may decide to fund less than 10 applicants.

I am happy to announce that Winthrop University will be hosting a Research Experience for Undergraduates program: Bridging Applied and Theoretical Mathematics from May 28th through July 25th.  This summer's research themes are Interactions between differential equations and cancer biology and Interactions between algebraic geometry, combinatorics and phylogenetics. The broad focus is on Sensing and Signaling in Biological Systems. The team of REU faculty represent multiple modern scientific disciplines including cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, physical chemistry, and computational biology.

We especially encourage rising sophomores and rising junior undergraduate science majors to apply.

NCTR Summer Student Research Participation Program 2014




ORISE Summer Student Research Participation Opportunity at NCTR

Introduction
Summer research opportunities are available at the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Jefferson, Arkansas.  This program is designed for science and mathematics students preparing for future careers in toxicology, regulatory science, or related scientific disciplines. Selected individuals will participate in research projects on the biological effect of potentially toxic chemicals and the solutions to toxicology problems that have a major impact on human health and the environment.
The appointment period is for up to 10 weeks beginning May 27, 2014.  The participant will receive a stipend depending on education level and experience. The Research Participation Program for FDA is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education under an agreement with FDA and the Department of Energy (DOE).  Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE, or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

REU in STEM Education at North Dakota State University

We are excited to announce the 2nd year of our summer undergraduate research program in discipline-based education at North Dakota State University. Growing up STEM is an excellent opportunity for students interested in the learning and teaching of STEM at the undergraduate level to engage in an immersive, 10-week summer research experience. Our program includes on-campus housing, a $5000 stipend, and is a great opportunity for students to get hands-on research experience as part of a cohort of undergraduate scholars. Students may have the opportunity to present their research at a national conference.

Summer ORISE Fellowship Opportunity at CDC

Introduction
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS), is seeking Summer ORISE Fellows to focus on public health issues related to the environment.  Candidates will join projects associated with developing and applying new methods to characterize and quantitate biochemical markers that are relevant in environmental exposures and chronic diseases.  The fellowship carries a stipend of approximately $2,700 per month for full-time undergraduate student fellows and $3,300 for full-time graduate student fellows.

Qualifications
Current undergraduate and graduate students majoring in chemistry or biology and who have completed or expect to complete three years of coursework in chemistry or biology before the start of the fellowship may apply.  They must also be able to comply with safety and security requirements before or upon reporting to CDC.
